Company History

Vaivén Circo Danza was created in 2008 when Raquel Pretel, dancer, met Miguel Angel Moreno, circus artist, in the Catalan company Els Comediants. Since then, the Spanish Circus company is constantly researching new forms by combining circus, dance and physical theatre with the idea of reaching high level of technical skills while telling a story. In the following years, they produce 4 shows: “La Felicidad en un Dos por Dos”, “Cayuco”, “Do Not Disturb” and “Des-Habitat”. The company has given more than 1.000 performances in total.

In 2009 two acrobats join the cast, Chema Martin and Emilio Lopez Arquillo, and during 2010 and 2011, the four members of the company decide to continue their training and circus research, especially about the movement, at the French Circus School Lido in Toulouse. This is where the idea of creating “Do Not Disturb” is born, as a result of their work on movement and research with object manipulation, as well as their personal development as actors/comedians. In “Do Not Disturb”, Vaivén looked for a live scenography, a well-studied set design fitting actors and scripts requirements and being a kind of protagonist on its own. After 6 years of touring with “Do Not Disturb”, giving more than 700 performances around Europe and crossing the Atlantic to perform in New York.

In April 2019, Vaivén Circo premiered “Esencial”. For this show they are collaborating with Irene de Paz who has a wealth of experience, touring intensively nationally and internationally, as tight-rope walker.

We also asked Jokin Oregi, who is director and founder of Marie de Jongh company, awarded National Children and Young people’s Theatre Prize 2018, to be our “External Eye” for this new production directed by Javi Parra.

In 2023, the company presented Esencial at BAM, Brooklyn, New York; TOHU in Montreal, Canada, and International Arts Carnival of Hong Kong.
